The Ward Mining District is located south of Ely, Nevada. There was a mining boom in Ward in the 1870's and these kilns were needed to provide charcoal for smelting silver ore.

These ovens were built by Swiss-Italian Carbonari or 'charcoal workers'. I wonder how you get into that particular line of work?

Each cycle of loading, burning, and unloading took 13 days. The inside of these ovens is not quite a 'happy place'.

There isn't much evidence of the actual town of Ward, except the cemetery and a few mine works here and there.

This is quite a lonely place in the winter.
