Serious tile work. Iznik tile work, that is.

The New Mosque (Yeni Cami).

Yeah, that's right. Over 400 years old, and it's still the New Guy.

The Tomb of Eyup Ensari (Ayoub, Eüyp) and the Mosque of the Great Eyup (Eyüp Sultan Camii).

This tomb is a very sacred place for Muslims, ranking up there with Mecca and Medina. Eyup was a friend of the Prophet and an early leader in the religion.

The tomb of Eyup is in this building.

I was a bit nervous entering the tomb. We were very careful following the protocol, but even so... I really didn't want to offend anyone or inadvertently cause a scene.

A large tomb on the path from the ferry landing to the Tomb of Eyup.

You needed some serious pull just to be buried along the path. The closer you get, the more desirable the tomb becomes.

A mosque, somewhere in Istanbul.

Most practicing Muslims answer the daytime calls to prayer at considerably more modest and conveniently located mosques. The faithful at this mosque, in a busy commercial area of the Sultanahmet, overflowed onto the street on a Friday afternoon.

Once the call goes out on a busy weekday, watch where you stand. Men will drop what they are doing and come running from all directions.
